Can I Get Guidance Regarding Cold Storage?

What is the approximate cost for building 1 hectare cold storage building

These delicate commodities can be cooled or frozen to prevent physical and chemical changes that would otherwise compromise their purity and speed up biological decomposition.

Allowing the transportation of these products to end users while preserving the best quality is the ultimate objective of cold storage warehousing. To understand everything about cold storage units, you should be equipped with comprehensive information regarding cold storage. Can I Get Guidance Regarding Cold Storage? We are going to explain everything about the cold storage to you. Keep reading to learn everything about it.

Market Cap of the Cold Storage Industry

A significant component in the industrial real estate market is cold storage.

Here are some essential details concerning its size in the US:

  • In 2017, 3.6 billion cubic feet of warehouse space were used for cold storage.
  • In 2021, the market for cold storage facilities was estimated to be worth $30.26 billion.
  • The three states with the biggest volume of cold storage are California, Washington, and Florida.

Types of the Cold Storage Units

Are there many different kinds of cold storage? The two primary categories of cold storage are:

  1. Cold storage that is refrigerated
  2. Chilled freezer storage

The purpose of refrigerated cold storage facilities, sometimes known as “refrigerated warehouses,” is to maintain the quality and shelf life of goods that don’t require freezing. They typically hold goods like fruits and vegetables and are maintained between 33° and 55° F.

On the other hand, frozen cold storage facilities aid in maintaining the integrity and security of necessary frozen materials.

What Kind of Industries Use the Cold Storage Units?

Can I get guidance regarding cold storage? Particular Sectors That Utilise Cold Storage are detailed below:

  • Eateries and food establishments
  • Food service businesses and supermarkets
  • Both exporters and importers
  • Makers of frozen foods
  • Agribusiness owners
  • Pharmacies and healthcare organizations

What Kind of Products Can Be Stored in the Cold Storage Units?

Following are some of the products that can be stored in the cold storage units:

  • Fresh produce, meat, seafood, dairy, processed foods, and frozen foods are examples of food.
  • Perishable nutrient goods, such as nutritional supplements,
  • Botanicals, including plants and flowers
  • Medicines, vaccinations, blood samples, IVs, and specific dental materials are examples of biopharmaceuticals.
  • Books, artifacts such as old books, paintings, and film canisters
  • Craft items like candles should not be maintained at high heat since they may lose their shape, color, or melt.
  • Cosmetics like cologne and lipstick
  • Chemicals that require cold storage, such as reagents and disinfectants, to slow down their chemical reactions
  • Fur, wool, and skins are examples of organic textiles.
  • Specialized goods, such as parts for aircraft

What is the Cold Storage Made Of?

The Principal Elements of Cold Storage Cooling Systems are the following:

  1. The  Coolant
The coolant (also known as a “refrigerant”) is like the blood in a mechanical human body analogous to a cold storage warehouse cooling system.

This is due to the fact that it is liquid in nature (usually anhydrous ammonia) and circulates through the body’s many tubes, pipes, and organs much like blood does.
  2.  A Compressor
The main part of a cold room cooling system is this.

If the coolant is the “blood,” then the compressor is the “heart” because it assists in the movement of the coolant. It accomplishes this by compressing the coolant to increase its temperature and pressure before pumping the heated refrigerant into the condenser.
  3.  A Condenser
Utilizing tubes, fans, and/or water spray, the condenser extracts heat from the refrigerant and disperses it into the atmosphere. The refrigerant undergoes this transformation, going from a gas to a liquid, before entering the receiver.
  4.  The Recipient
The high-pressure liquid coolant condensate that the receiver receives from the condenser is stored there. This enables the receiver to maintain pressure throughout the system while also acting as a buffer to handle higher loads, such as when extra cool air is required.

The receiver releases the refrigerant into an expansion valve when necessary.
  5.  Separator
The separator, which is the next component, is helped by the expansion valve in controlling pressure, temperature, and the quantity of refrigerant discharged.
  6. The Distributor
Refrigerant from the receiver is received by the separator, where it is gathered.

The refrigerant is drawn into another expansion valve by pumps outside the separator, where the flow rate is modified before entering the evaporator.
  7.  The Evaporator
The process that lowers the temperature by introducing cold air into the area being cooled is called an evaporator. It accomplishes this by blowing air from the area between the tubes as a fan circulates cold refrigerant through a series of tubes.

The Temperature of the Cold Storage Units

Although cold storage warehouse temperatures might vary, they typically fall between -30° and 70° F.

Frozen goods storage facilities can reach temperatures as low as -122.8°C (for pharmaceutical ultra-low temperature facilities).

However, the -10 to -20° F temperature range is the most typical for freezers.
