How does a condenser work in cold storage?

Which Industrial Items/Products Require A Cold Storage Warehousing Facility? When it comes to keeping the quality and freshness of numerous industrial items and products that demand precise temperature control, a cold storage warehousing facility is essential. Following are the top products that require cold storage facilities: 1. Pharmaceuticals: In order to preserve their potency and usefulness, many pharmaceutical items, including vaccines, insulin, antibiotics, and other temperature-sensitive drugs, must be kept in cold storage. These products' essential temperature range is maintained throughout their shelf life thanks to cold storage. 2. Food and Beverages: In order to preserve freshness and prevent decomposition, some food and beverage products, particularly perishable goods, must also be kept in cold storage. Dairy goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, fish, and frozen food products are a few examples. The shelf life of these products is increased by the use of cold storage, which helps to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeast, and mold. 3. Chemicals: Some laboratory reagents and industrial chemicals are extremely sensitive to temperature changes. In order to maintain their stability and stop deterioration, cold storage is crucial. This holds true for chemicals used in making pharmaceuticals, research labs, and other industrial activities. 4. Biologics And Vaccinations: Biologics, including vaccinations, cell-based therapies, and blood products, require exact temperature control. These items are kept in cold storage to maintain their effectiveness and potency. Particularly sensitive to temperature, vaccines must be kept in a certain temperature range to maintain their efficacy. 5. Electronic Components: It may be necessary to store some electronic components in cold storage, especially if they contain sensitive elements or have unique storage needs. Low temperatures aid in avoiding oxidation, moisture absorption, and other types of degradation that can impair the functionality and dependability of these parts. 6. Industrial Raw Materials: To preserve their chemical qualities, some industrial raw materials, such as adhesives, resins, and specific kinds of polymers, must be stored in the cold. In order to maintain the quality of the finished products, cold storage aids in avoiding premature curing, deterioration, and spoilage. For the correct storage of numerous industrial commodities, cold storage is essential. It guarantees the quality, potency, and integrity of various products, ranging from pharmaceuticals and food products to chemicals, biologics, electronic components, and industrial raw materials by supplying essential temperature control

Condenser is crucial for cold storage but do you know ‘how does a condenser work in cold storage.’ The main function of a condenser is to allow temperature refrigerant vapor and high pressure to condense and release heat.

What is the use of a condenser?

A condenser carries out a change of phase at high pressure and temperature from gas to liquid. The condenser pipes should be robust to bear temperature and pressure gradients. It is the reason you must know which company makes cold storage and buy high-quality condenser pipes. Condenser pipes liquefy and cool the high pressure into vapor.

How does a condenser work in cold storage?

A condenser is good at heat exchange efficiency. It acts as a heat sink determining the cold storage plant efficiency. The cold storage plant working is as follows:

  • The compressor in cold storage compresses refrigerant vaporized to high temperature and high pressure, raising the refrigerant boiling point.
  • The condenser liquefies the refrigerant vapor to a high-temperature and high-pressure state. Here heat rejection takes place.
  • The condenser collects condensate in a reservoir and passes through an expansion valve. In this process, the temperature and pressure decrease from the earlier state.
  • The liquid refrigerant low-pressure allows the passing of the heat of refrigerated space hot air, and it starts evaporating the refrigerant liquid. Thus the cooling is felt, and the atmosphere heat decreases.
  • Blowers circulate to store vegetables and fruits in the chilled air and keep them fresh.

Working of condensers

Condenser design is in such a way that from a working fluid, they transfer heat to the surrounding air or a secondary fluid. The condenser during the phase changes relies on the heat transfer efficiency during the vapor condensation into liquid.

Condenser Fan

A condenser fan is on frost-free refrigerators. In the cabinet bottom, there is the condenser coil. The fan draws cool air through the front grille, while the same is in circulation through condenser coils. It is also out of the front grille into the room.

Copper Tubing

Copper Condenser Tubes are in evaporators and condensers in sugar refineries. Deoxidized copper transfer heat from steam to air or water due to its excellent resistance to corrosion.

Functions of condenser types:

The condenser is in three types evaporative, air-cooled, and water-cooled.

Air-cooled Condenser

This condenser type uses air to reject heat from the system, and it is an external fluid. They have copper coils and are into two subsets, natural and forced convection.

  • Natural Convection- Here, the air contacts warm coils and absorbs the refrigerant heat within the coil, thereby increasing the air temperature. The warm air becomes lighter and goes up, replacing it with cold air, and the heat eliminates. Thus the cycle becomes continuous, and the refrigerant loses heat.
  • Forced Convection- A blower or a fan removes heat here from the refrigerant coils. The forced convection condenser types are in water coolers, air conditioners, and packaged air condition plants.

Water-cooled condenser

This condenser type removes heat using water as the fluid. These condensers are suitable in places having no shortage of water supply. They are in three kinds:

  • Double tube- These condensers are inside a refrigerant tube and have water. The water absorbs the heat of the refrigerant. However, the cooling process is natural convection as the refrigerant tube contacts natural air circulation. Double-tube condensers were a thing of the past. It had several gaskets and flanges in the heat exchangers that frequently had maintenance issues.
  • Shell and Coil Condensers– In this condenser a finned water tubing coil is in a welded shell. The hot refrigerant flows within the shell, while there is the circulation of cool water within the coil. It is inexpensive and compact.
  • Shell and Tube Condensers– In this condenser type, rejecting heat is through a cylindrical shell featuring a water tube. Here the water pumping is through the pipes, and the refrigerant flows in the shell. These condensers are easy to maintain as the fins installation in pipes assures better heat transfer.

There are horizontal shell and tube condensers widely used. However, the tube and vertical shell condensers are useful in large-capacity systems with ammonia. Thus, it allows tube cleaning with running plants.

Evaporative Condensers

This condenser type is a mix of water and air-cooled. It uses water and air as its condensing medium. The water spray evaporates over coils, and the required heat for vaporizing is from the refrigerant heat. These condensers are in places facing water scarcity. Here the water drops into a sump, making up for the evaporated amount.

Wrapping up

Condensers are in different types helping to remove heat. Learning ‘how does a condenser work in cold storage’ is indispensable for any cold storage owner. None of these condenser types has an advantage over the other.
